3 Tips to decode feedback and handle tough work situations

Every hiring story ends one of two ways: you leave by choice or get laid off.

Getting laid off is awkward, emotional, and leaves you questioning if you were enough.

The decision rarely comes out of nowhere though.

If it’s a surprise, you and your manager likely have different feedback styles, and it’s on you to adapt.

Not all managers are leaders, and many lack emotional intelligence.

3 tips to help you understand any feedback (even with low EQ, hehe)

Read the room.

In the room is full of extroverts, your introverted soul might look weird- time to adapt.

The only hires that lasted were those who shared the same personality type as the manager, or knew how to play the game.

Understand the depth of the feedback

Some managers choose silence over confrontation and will rather fire you than share what’s wrong.

Catch what’s left unsaid but is in the air.

Possible hints are:

Do they give short replies when things don’t go as planned?

Do they ask tough questions, then back off quickly?

Do they give comments like ‘I thought it would be different?’

All of this shapes their personality, where their own patterns reveal much more than words.

Always have a plan B.

If you are second - guessing their mood, you will miss something.

Start looking for a job before you lose it.

Be prepared for any unplanned feedback - most won’t push if you push back.

Or, better yet,  just leave the toxic job, hehe.
